Cernunnos

Cernunnos is a divine figure, widely recognized in the Pagan Thought, the God of Hunting, Forestry and fertility. Figure of a Horned God is omnipresent in ancient cultures and not limited to the worship of the Celts. The greek God Pan, the Minoan Minotaur and the Hindu Lord Pashupati, all figures are divine or semi-horned god with the emphasis on their masculinity, their indomitable nature and wild, the bringer of fertility.

Yet the Celtic Cernunnos is a figure much more detailed and complex, linking both historically and spiritually (and culturally), the Celtic peoples of Europe.
"Sorcerer" Lascaux Cave France
The oldest archaeological sources, identifying Cernunnos, comes from the iconic depictions and stone carvings found in Celtic areas of Transalpine Gaul, of 'Northern Italy (Cisalpine Gaul) and the southern coast of Britain. These examples clearly indicate that Cernunnos was adored by European tribes of Celtic and Germanic stock for an entire period from before 400 BC until at least AD 100. As happened to many other deities, cultures later assimilated the figure of Cernunnos its pantheon, which proves the "multiculturalism" of God, not tied exclusively Celtic area. The concept of such a wide spread of the "Horned God" suggests a common origin in Europe. This figure could be identified in some cave paintings found in France.
One in particular, called "The Sorcerer", depicts a mythological being similar to Cernunnos, a tall man with deer antlers and well marked male sexual attributes, as well as characteristics other animals such as the front legs similar to those of a bear.
This painting above the first representations of Cernunnos established several thousand years, but tightly fixed to the concept of the Horned God, in this case perhaps played by a shaman with ritual vestments engaged in a ritual to appease and propitiate the spirit of the deer hunting . A concept is widely applicable to the spirituality of the primitive Indo-European and, more recently, at the time of the Celts.

Cernunnos - Rock Painting in Valcamonica

The etymology of the name comes from an inscription Cernunnos this on a statue of the God found in some works to the foundations of the cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, in the XIV Century. The statue, attributed to the Celtic tribe of the Parisi, listed on the bottom with the first letter of a word erased, "ernunnos. The missing letter is derived from the ancient Irish Gaelic, giving meaning to the name of God in the ancient Gaelic language, the words "Cernon" or "carnon" can be translated with horn and the translation into Irish Gaelic is "CERN", as well as in Breton and Welsh. Registration is then easily completed. All these words come Indo
"Krno.

While a man was the warrior or the hunter, the force that protected the clan and get food. Being always been surrounded by animals, certainly supports this idea, but that is Cernunnos was the God of the Hunt, but also the God of the woods, then appears not only as predators, but also as the guardian protector of those animals , which is closely related. Cernunnos is nearly always portrayed with a torc around his neck, wrists and horns. Given the fact that in the Celtic culture, the torc symbolized wealth and nobility, Cernunnos could be regarded as a great king, who shall hunt, and then not to support one family, but the whole community. The idea Celtic's wealth is in fact related to the abundance of the gifts of the wild, on which the Hunter God was in control, but also the possession of gold coins, a coin purse represented by material wealth with which Cernunnos was often portrayed.

Santa Brigida, a goddess that was made Santa

With the advent of Christianity, the powerful pagan goddess was transformed the beloved saint of Ireland, second only to St. Patrick, St. Bridget.

It is said that St. Brigid was the daughter of a Druid who had a vision about a girl who had to bear the name of the Great Goddess.
Source Sacred dedicated to St. Bridget, Liscannor Co. Clare
His daughter was born at dawn, while his mother was crossing the threshold of the house, so the child came into the world "either inside or outside," buy the state known as liminality, from the Latin "limen," a state that allows you to stay "between" places and time, between one world and another, between our reality and the ' Otherworld, the realm of fairies. Also in the Celtic tradition, lìalba was a very special moment, where large events could appear magical, but also a time when they could open passages between the Otherworld and our own. Personally I think these circumstances, together with those referred to in a bit, put the figure of Santa Brigida in light of "fairy" almost to the point of classifying the same as Santa Changeling. In fact, as a child, Brigid could not be fed anything except the milk of a particular white cow with red ears. Animals with this characteristic staining, were often associated with the Little People and all'Altromondo, further evidence on the possible origin of the fabled Santa addition, as we have seen in previous posts, the Pagan Goddess Brigid had with him two magical oxen. In Celtic society, cattle are considered the most valuable animals, revered as the bearers of plenty, and Saint Bridget, like its corresponding Pagana, was always closely associated with livestock in general and dairy in particular. As an adult he was always accompanied by a cow that provided all the milk she needed.
When she became abbess of Kildare, miraculously, the production of milk and butter from cows of the abbey was increased significantly, to the point of power a real lake of milk three times a day, and you can pack a hundred baskets full of butter! When he died, his skull was preserved in Kildare as reliquia, usato per abbellire la statua pagana integrata nella chiesa.

[2] In Italy have disappeared from the table three out of four varieties of fruit and a large percentage of those remaining bears the risk of extinction, while missing some thirty breeds of cows, pigs and sheep and 95 percent of the ancient variety of wheat has been lost. And 'what emerges from the first file on the phenomenon of "F armers Market in Italy ", presented at the first national assembly Agrimercati Country Friend of Coldiretti. In Italy in the last century, there were 8,000 varieties of fruit, but now you get to just under 2,000 and 1,500 of these are well considered at risk of disappearing even as a result of modern distribution systems that favor large commercial quantity and standardization of the offer. But over the past fifty years - highlights Coldiretti - has also lost [3] thirty breeds of domestic animals, including five types of cattle, Ten of sheep and pigs and three goats. And seventy-one others are threatened with extinction, according to Eurostat data.
This not only threatens to impoverish the choice at the table with the withdrawal of certain flavors and products of a territory, but - Coldiretti - it blends a wealth of biodiversity and important part of them ' environmental and cultural identity of an area. recovery action should be important to new business opportunities created by the farmers' markets Country activist friends in all regions and have offered economic opportunities to farmers and growers of local varieties and breeds at risk of extinction that would otherwise would not be [4] never survive the rules of modern forms of distribution . For example - explains Coldiretti - fruit and vegetables sold at farmers' markets are conserved in more than a week on average 'because they do not have to suffer long journeys and this allows you to sell even more variety' perishable that has no place on the shelves of hypermarkets .
It is estimated that - Coldiretti - at least 100 plant varieties defined children, including fruits, vegetables, legumes, wild herbs and products obtained at least 30 different breeds of cattle, pigs, sheep and goats are raised on a small scale with the existing network outlet to markets for farmers Country Amica. In Campania si trova la Cicerchia, legume adatto alla preparazione di molti piatti. In Sardinia Sa pump was later recovered, sort of thick skin and rough cedar used - said Coldiretti - preparation of a typical wedding cake, candy or preparation as well as an ingredient in liqueurs. Farmers markets is also often forget to buy wild herbs, for cooking, in care of the body or health. An example - says Coldiretti - is the nettle that can be used in cooking for soups, omelettes, quiches, stuffed fresh pasta and risotto, even though the recipe that best enhances the taste of the dumplings is green. To fulfill these simply add to the potato dough classic good nettle previously boiled and chopped eggs and flour. Once cooked, can be served with a sauce of cheese and walnuts. The same decoction can be also an excellent remedy for sore throat if used to rinse and gargle. Calendula, however, has excellent antiseptic, healing and anti-inflammatory, especially to solve minor annoyances such as skin rashes, skin redness or simple.
